LYMES’ SENIOR CENTER
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEEING
MAY 19, 2014
PRESENT: Sue Campbell, Ruth Young, Ann Griffith, Doris Rand, Mary Miles, Diana Seckla, Dot McAndrew, Diane Blackwell, Gary Weed, Stephanie Lyon
ABSENT:   Bob Pierson, Don Tapper, Doris Johnson
GUEST:     Janet Sturges, Suzanne Thompson
The meeting was called to order at 2:00pm by Chairperson, Sue Campbell
Janet Sturges reminded everyone about the Town Budget Meeting tonight, Monday, May 19th at 7:30pm at Town Hall and to vote to make the Senior Center’s Director a full-time position.
Suzanne Thompson came to the meeting to discuss the garden project that The Fenton Family wants to do at the center. Suzanne has her Master Gardner’s Certification and needs to do a 30 hour community project. She has met with the Fenton Family and with Diane Blackwell regarding the up-coming garden project. Diane reported on the garden project as follows:
  • Formal letter of project acceptance mailed
  • Both select-people e-mailed
  • Both select-people approved the garden project
  • Garden location mowed by Ed Adanti’s staff
  • Targeting June for construction
They will need fencing, material for the raised beds etc. There will be no cost to the Senior Center. The Garden Club is giving Ethan $75.00 to get started. The Board of Directors would like Ethan to come to the June 16th meeting. As yet, we have not met him.
SECRETARY REPORT: (Judy Dutton) Motion made and seconded to accept report as presented.
TREASURER REPORT: (Robert Pierson-(absent): Sue Campbell handed out copies of the report. Any questions will be discussed at the June 16th Board Meeting.
COMMUNICATIONS: (Dot McAndrew) a card was sent to Doris Johnson from the Board of Directors.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
  • SPECIAL EVENTS: (Doris Johnson) None
  • DIRECTORS REPORT: (Stephanie Lyon)
  • “ART in NATURE WEEKEND – June 20th,21st and 22nd
  • Free and Open to the public
  • All workshops, classes, demonstrations and trail hikes are free
  • Some require pre-sign up (see flyers available at Senior Center)
  • There are fees if you participate in the Silent Auction  or purchase paintings
  • There is a fee for lunch that will be prepared by The Lions Club on Saturday, June 21st and Sunday, June 22nd – 11:00am-1:00pm both days
  • Stephanie handed out flyers for the summer concerts: Thursday, July 10th, 7:00pm – Old Lyme Town Band/ Thursday, July 17th, 7:00pm – United States Coast Guard Jazz Band/Thursday July 24th, 7:00pm – Waterford Town Band/Thursday, July 31st, 7:00pm – 102nd Army Band
  • Thanks to The Old Lyme Republican Town Committee and The Old Lyme Democratic Town Committee for sponsoring the Ice Cream Socials following each concert.
  • Three out of the four concerts will be held outside, weather permitting
  • We would like to get tables that are lighter and easier to handle
  • Purchasing a party pavilion tent for outside events – (see under new business)
  • Diane Blackwell and Linda Camarra will help set up tables
  • Ice cream will be served inside
  • A ping-pong table is available at no cost if the senior center would like it
  • Yes, we would like to have it
  • Volunteer Luncheon, May 27th at 1:00pm
  • June 7th – National Honor Society presents an Ice Cream Social for the Seniors at the Senior Center
  • June 17th – Tuesday – “Lincoln and Leadership”
  • June 24th – Tuesday – Lecture on Arthritis
  • Wii cabinet almost finished
  • Newsletter not being mailed out on time
  • Homebound looks for newsletter to get the menu
  • Copies of the menu for each month will be put in the homebound lunch delivery bag
  • Stephanie will not be at the June 16th meeting
FRIENDS of the LYMES’ SENIOR CENTER: (Diane Blackwell/Bob Pierson/Diana Seckla)
  • The corporation has been formed and registered with the State of Ct
  • Diane Blackwell and Bob Pierson are the signed incorporators
  • The first official meeting was held on May 6th
Officers:  President: Bob Pierson/Vice President: Gerry Nolan/ Treasurer: Diana Seckla/Secretary: Leslie Massa
The sole function of the “Friends” group is to be the fund raising arm for the Senior Center and for local senior activities
Bill Bernblum is filing the Federal 1023 application for the non-profit status. (Time-line for this is probably 3 months)
Leslie Massa will begin a formal binder that contains all the official “Friend” documents
The binder will be housed in the Records

NONAGENARIAN PHOTO WALL: (Diane Blackwell)

  • Reserved date of Wednesday, September 24th
                Suggested time: 1:30 after lunch
                Suggested activity: An afternoon tea and desserts
                Diane showed us several frames to see what we preferred
                Photos will be taken of all 90+ seniors if possible
                Each photo will have the person’s name on it
                Do we want a professional or someone else who has a camera to do this?
                Cost projections for frames/development/photo paper & ink/labels/wall hangers approximately $250.00 - $300.00
  • LAND TRUST HIKING CLASSES WITH GEORGE JAMES
  • 10-15 hikers each week and is very successful
  • VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SETTING UP & BREAKING DOWN FOR LARGE PROGRAMS AT THE SENIOR CENTER: i.e. Summer Concerts/ Art in Nature Weekend
  • SEARCH COMMITTEE: (Mary Miles/Diana Seckla)
  • Present Slate of Officers for 2014-2015

  • Will vote for the slate of officers at the next meeting
FINANCE: (Bob Pierson/Doris Rand/Gary Weed) None

PUBLICITY: (Stephanie Lyon, Sue Campbell/Diane Blackwell) see comments under Directors Report-pg.2

OLD BUSINESS: It was discussed again about the windows in the nurses’ office and the broken screen on the back porch. This has been brought up several times but nothing has been done. A motion was made and seconded to have Chairperson Sue Campbell speak to someone at Town Hall to see if we can get these two items fixed.

NEW BUSINESS: A flyer was handed around to the Board Members with pictures of a party pavilion tent 20’ x 20’ that could be purchased for $349.00 at Ocean State.  This tent could be used outside for concerts and other outdoor activities. After some discussion on pros and cons, a motion was made and seconded to purchase this tent. Motion not passed.
A motion was made and seconded to adjourn at 3:15pm
